UN sees largely peaceful elections in Venezuela

Sunday’s regional and municipal elections in Venezuela were seen as largely peaceful, said the United Nations on Tuesday. “We have taken note of the largely peaceful regional and municipal elections in Venezuela, which took place last Sunday, and the efforts by the National Electoral Council to improve the electoral process,” said the UN secretary-general’s press office in a note to correspondents.

The UN Panel of Electoral Experts is concluding its deployment to Venezuela. The panel was able to engage with a wide range of political and civil society actors, as well as electoral authorities and experts, and follow the different phases and aspects of the electoral process. It will now prepare and submit to the secretary-general an internal report, said the note.

Earlier on Tuesday, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the United Nations hopes all disputes will be addressed through legal channels.

“We’ve seen some isolated reports of violence, which we deplore, and we hope the authorities will conduct the appropriate investigations into these cases,” he said. “Any disputes about the conduct or the results of the elections needs to be addressed through the established legal and constitutional means.”(Xinhua)
